Can I Install Laminate Flooring Myself?

Pergo and other Laminate Flooring AdvanatagesCan I Install Laminate Flooring Myself?

Often I am asked if someone other than a professional installer is really capable of installing laminate flooring such as Pergo TrafficMaster.

I often reply if you can change a light bulb and cut a piece of bread than you can install laminate flooring. If you take your time and use the proper tools laminate flooring installation is easy.

Pergo and other Laminate Flooring Advanatages

Pergo and other Laminate Flooring AdvanatagesLaminate flooring such as Pergo and other brands has gained popularity due to some advanatages over traditional hardwood flooring.

Laminate flooring mimics the look of traditional woods while offering easy installation and lasting durability. At quick glance at laminate flooring, it can often be difficult to spot the difference between hardwoods and laminate flooring. What appears to be a natural wood grain pattern is really a thin layer of decor paper (a photographic image) under a tough-as-nails protective film that is glued and pressed to a high-density backing board. Laminate flooring comes in an array of wood effects as well as stone and ceramic tile effects.

So you have Pergo Prodigy and need some help? You are told by Home Depot that Dupont Real Touch Elite is the same.
The tounge and groove is different not letting these two laminates to work together. I know that is not the answer many of you were looking for. Dupont Real Touch Elite and Pergo Prodigy are different. Pergo Prodigy has been discontinued when Home Depot and Pergo could not reach an agreement, so Dupont jumped in and took over the laminate contract.
Dupont has a 30 year warranty instead of the 25 year warranty from Pergo.

Here is what the new Home Depot brings to their laminate flooring customers:

    How to Lay Pergo Flooring

Laminate Flooring installation is about as easy as it can come when dealing with flooring materials.

It’s an “interlocking floating” floor, which means the floor tiles or planks attach to each other rather than to the subfloor. They attach via a tongue-and-groove, glueless system that makes it possible to install a laminate floor over virtually any existing floor (except high-pile carpet.)

While a floating floor eliminates the need to prep a subfloor, it does require the use of an underlayment. Underlayments provide protection against warping from moisture beneath, particularly if you’re installing the floor over concrete. Underlayments also reduce or eliminate “hollow” sounds generated from traffic on the floor.
